An Update Of Sorts

It has been a fair while since I posted anything here, but that’s not for lack of desire. I’ve been busy balancing school, my wonderful girlfriend, and the oddity of having a regular people job. Basically, I’ve not had time to post anything significant here. In fact, this will be my first “free” weekend since I arrived in Richmond. I can’t say that I particularly approve. I’d much rather be with Ashley, having fun in any number of cities that are excellent solely because we’re both present and having fun.

Alas.

Today does, however, mark the end of my Spring Semester at University of Maryland University College. During this semester, I’ve worked from the Middle East, Cuba, Pennsylvania, Washington DC, Winchester, Richmond, and Chicago. I’ve worked from libraries and hotel rooms and villas and private homes. I’ve worked through my 40 hour weeks of work and my 18 credit hour course load (yes, I rocked 6 classes at once) to come out with, if my final paper and my final exam for my final two classes came out right, a final tally of five A’s and one B. Damn it. I could have done better. What’s done is done, though. I can deal with that set of grades, I suppose. ;-)

I’ve now got a month off. Time to relax, take some time to chill, laze around a bit– Continue Reading…

Arrival in Philadelphia, Main Line

I’ve been on the road and settling in; I’ll do my best to get caught up. :-)

We arrived in Philadelphia around 10:30 pm, leaving plenty of time to catch one of the two final SEPTA trains out to the Main Line area. This would be my first expedition out into the Main Line; I had no idea what to expect and was just a little bit nervous about the entire proposition. Would I fit in? Would I like it? A very short time would tell.

The SEPTA ride was uneventful; Ash pointed out all of the points of interest we’d be visiting later (though there was little visible at 11:00 at night.) We arrived at Wayne station and hopped off the train, only to realize that we’d forgot to arrange transportation to our hotel.

Not to worry. A quick Internet search and a Main Line taxi was on the way!

My first experience (aside from Ash) with a Main Liner was our cab driver. He was polite, friendly, and into a bit of personal space violation. Continue Reading…

RIC to DC; White House Stopover

With my day long business in Richmond done and a cheap rental car acquired, I headed to DC to meet back up with the Lady of Cinders. I had a ton of points from my 10,000 stays at various Hilton properties so we would be staying a block or two north of the White House. I arrived first, so I got situated, checked in (with a sweet suite upgrade) and headed off to Union Station to pick her up.

After a bit of situating we went out to grab dinner, drinks, and some late night relaxation in Lafayette Park next to the “no nuclear bombs” lady who seems to be a fixture in DC. After a bit of people watching, we may have uh… kissed and such, in the park, in the dark.

…hush. It totally WAS just kissing. No, really! I mean, there were cops there and everything! Continue Reading…

Traveling Light

My essential travel items

Itinerant Gear

I’m taking a break from the whole travel updates thing today. Rather, I’d like to share with you my essential personal belongings. That picture there? That’s everything I have that matter. That’s my life in three bags. No, really. That’s it. Granted, it isn’t everything I own. I do have random things scattered about the universe. But that’s everything I travel with, that’s what I need to establish myself in a new location. That’s me, condensed for travel.

Basically, the bags contain:

Hiking Pack: Clothing, toiletries, glasses, sewing kit, running shoes, a few books, and a spare cable or two. (35-45 pounds)
Laptop Bag: Laptop, books, cables, minor trinkets & gifts, and a wall charger for my phone. (20-30 pounds)
Camera Bag: A camera, duh. (super light)

That’s it. That’s all I need. And honestly, I could do without the camera bag in a pinch.

Hooray! I’m actually traveling like a role-playing character. ;-)
